Nick Brandt est un photographe engagé, qui met le doigt où sa fait mal. Après nous avoir montré l'Afrique majestueuse avec ces animaux sauvages, puis le massacre des ces animaux par l'homme dans un deuxième livre, le revoilà avec cette superbe série, où il a fait tirer en grand format des photos emblématiques de son premier album, et les a posées à l'endroit où il les avait prises des années plus tôt et les a photographiées comme si les animaux sauvages était encore là pour dénoncer la totale destruction par l'homme de leur environnement naturel.Les tirages que j'ai pu admirer à Paris photos sont gigantesques et magnifiques. Cette édition leur rend hommage, par sa qualité (et sa taille, certes difficile à ranger dans une bibliothèque mais indispensable vu que ces images fourmillent de détails). Magnifique

First off this is how photo books should be made, large to allow the artist to display their skill with thick high quality paper and a quality dust jacket. This is by far the best coffee table style book I have purchased in terms of quality of materials.As to the content, stunning, heart wrenching, profound, sad. The photos themselves are superb and the artist overwhelmingly accomplishes his goal of making the view feel the tragedy that is the destruction of the natural world and its inhabitants. It opens with a short forward by the author and then goes into the featured photos. The photographer lets the photos speak for themselves there are no interesting quips or notes about location or facts about the subject surrounding the photos. To have such would detract from the stunning beauty and sadness the photos evoke. After the photos of the life size prints the next section is labeled "cast". This features full sized photos of the animal subjects as they were original photographed before being put on life size prints and setup around Africa. In the final section there are some behind the scenes photos of the construction and placement of the life sized photos. The author also shares more details about the the process, some stories about creating these prints and books, and thoughts on life and conservation.If you are at all interested in beautiful photography and conservation I would highly recommend this book. Its emotional impact upon viewing is tremendous and I hope that one day I can see larger prints in a gallery or museum.
This is a book that made me sad. Actually all the other Nick's books have made me sad also. And the reason fort this sadness is the inevitable fate of the wild life in Africa (not to mention other parts of the world).The other three of Nick's books (On This Earth; A Shadow Falls; Across The Ravaged Land) still contain a bit of hope: if we can stop poaching, the wild life will survive. In this newest book Nick has realized thet there may not be hope at all. Because of the fast rate of the growth of the population and the urbanization in Africa we will eventually destroy all the natural habitats of the wild life.But the book is beautiful and the print is excellent. This is a must for all wild life and Africa lovers. And it complements the original trilogy seamlessly.
