Très bel ouvrage, à recommander aux curieux, livre en parfait état avec cd rom inclu des cartes en version numérisées HD.Bref, un achat qu'on ne regrette pas pour tout amateur de curiosité ou géographe passionné.
Comme tous les autre livres de la collection, il est parfait, contient de belles images de cartes de toutes sortes.
Really neat book of odd maps and diagrams from various historical sources. Comes with a CD that you can download images and print for personal use. Good source for producing mix-media art.
I am sure glad I bought this book. I was tired of MapQuest and Google maps and wanted something I could hold in my hands as I trekked through history. My adventurous run through the Mongolian Empire prior to the 18th century was made easier by this book. Not to mention the star maps I used as I blasted my way through the Milky Way to see what was on the other side (just more space, imagine that!). The best bit about this book of charts is that the paper is slick and thick. So if the spit of a camel drips on it as you're trying to cross a desert (stupid things, always spitting!), it easily wipes off and the map is still easy to read.All adventurers and explorers should have this book. As GPS and Google require batteries, this book only requires your hands.
This is a fine selection of wonderful maps, charts, city plans, geological information, comparative overviews of mountains and rivers, climatological and oceanographic charts, etc. Most are from the XIX century; although some are copies of much older maps, and their provenience are usually France, the Netherlands or Germany, but also includes exquisitely beautiful Japanese maps, astronomical charts, Chinese maps, etc. With an excellent CD-ROM where you can find high resolution copies of all the included maps (the name of the file is the number of the page and its relative position) this product could be a true find (much more valuable than this three star rating would suggest).If you're looking for a very elegant and intelligent coffee table book or as a gift for a map aficionado, or even to relax imagining faraway places and bygone ages, then I definitively recommend this book for you. But this work as a huge flaw! In its cover the title mentions "...Historical and curious Maps". So if you're interested in knowing anything about the hundreds of maps provided, including the maker, some important subtitles, political situation for certain satirical maps, how they were found, etc, you won't find anything of the sort here, even the dates are frequently unmentioned. You just have the maps, a back index with the country and sometimes with the date, and the very good computer files.Just as an example how this can be annoying: in page 46 you have fascinating Native American pictographs, but you don't have the date, context or location...so far as I know it could have been drawn by a Native American child in 1998 (with very small historical relevance, except for their parents) or an amazing 1750 find representing early mapping efforts from the Navaho tribe. You just don't know!!!If this book had been published in 1990 it would be a treasure indeed. There were few published inexpensive resources like this one. But this is a 2005 product. Let's face it: Anyone can find Hi-Res ancient and old maps for free nowadays; so this book should have a few more pages summarily describing the wonderful published maps and charts (if there were page limitations, the publisher could have used the CD-ROM to provide the extra information).
The Dutch Pepin Press publishing house is well known for its books graphic design and visual communication. This is the first time they turned to maps, and the début is really wonderful.The book contains more than a hundred maps of all kind - antique maps of lands, cities, or journeys, geographical, political, theological, and even humorous maps. The book is well printed and a real pleasure to hold in hands. The CD with all the maps is a real gem, hi-res images allow for the readers to explore many maps in great details.The only real minus is that the book has 0 (zero) information on the maps, besides the title and (sometimes) the year of publication. It is not an academic study in any sense, rather, it 's just a lovely and inspirational compilation of really interesting maps.
There are no descriptions on the pages and I LOVE that (the descriptions are in the back). I love wondering what each one is. After my daydream I flip to the back to see what it is or if I'm right. My husband and I love maps and we really enjoy this book. The CD-ROM included is also great.
